Gather a few coordinating favorites

• A pocket with personality: Try Dark Gray Shadow Words for the embroidered pocket front and Turquoise Harry's Spells for its lining or another accent. These coordinating cottons are sold in continuous quarter-yard increments. Choose your pocket size first and allow extra fabric for hooping, seams and directional prints. You'll also need small appliqué fabric pieces in the colors shown in your chosen design.
• Support for the stitches: OESD Heavy Weight TearAway and OESD SoftWeb sheets are the stabilizer and fusible web used in OESD's cut-in-place instructions. The TearAway supports the pocket fabric; SoftWeb goes on the back of the appliqué pieces. Test the combination on a scrap of your chosen background before stitching the pocket.
• Thread and a helping hand: Choose Isacord embroidery thread using the individual design's thread chart. A little OESD TearAway Tape can hold the appliqué fabric in position, clear of the needle path. Have sharp appliqué scissors, a suitable embroidery needle and a pressing cloth ready, too.

Add your magic before assembling the bag

1. Find the perfect spot. Read the panel's sewing directions first, then plan an added lined pocket using your preferred pocket construction. Print the embroidery template at actual size and check the finished pocket area, leaving room for its top edge and seams. Keep the fabric oversized for hooping; the hoop size alone doesn't determine the finished pocket size.
2. Stitch while everything is flat. Fuse SoftWeb to the wrong side of the appliqué fabrics as directed. Hoop the pocket background with stabilizer, stitch the placement line, then cover it with the prepared appliqué fabric after removing the paper backing. Follow the file's tackdown and trimming sequence, keeping the background in the hoop as you trim. Repeat for each appliqué area and finish the remaining embroidery.
3. Finish the pocket, then the tote. Carefully remove the excess TearAway and press as directed. Cut and line your pocket, then attach it to the appropriate flat bag or lining piece before closing the bag's seams. Sew around the pocket's sides and bottom, leaving its top open, and continue with the panel's tote construction.
