Bring your project together

• Ready for the cutter: Use this Heart die with a compatible GO! cutter and the GO! cutting mat. The mat measures 5" × 10"; Studio setups use the appropriate adapter and cutting plastic instead. Match the small, medium or large embroidery file to the corresponding die-cut heart, keeping the design at its original size.
• A firm foundation for cotton: OESD's cotton-patch method uses permanent StabilStick CutAway behind the fabric and two layers of Badgemaster wash-away film in the hoop. Our Badgemaster link is the MonoSol film sold by World Weidner; follow the tutorial for the material preparation. This is different from stitching applique directly onto a towel or garment.
• Keep the pieces in place: Tear Away Tape helps hold the prepared fabric over the placement stitches. The Grippy Grid and Perfect Embroidery Press Cloth help with hooping and the final press.
• Choose where your heart will go: Add a finished patch to a tote, sewing pouch or quilt backing, or give a White Apron a little sewing-room personality. For a heat-applied finish, use Fuse and Seal after the embroidery is complete. Fuse and Seal is not stitchable; it is a finishing adhesive, not the support behind the cotton while you embroider.

OESD's collection thread palette: White, Marsh, Olive Drab, Passion Fruit, Pink Tulip, Tropicana, Turquoise, Spearmint, Dark Orange. This is the palette for all of Happy Patches, so check your chosen heart's thread sequence before shopping — one heart may use only some of these colors.

Make it feel like your own. Pink Watercolor batik is a pretty starting point for a heart patch. Small prints, solids and scraps from a quilt are lovely choices too. The fabric is optional, and it is not the exact fabric shown in OESD's sample.

A simple way to get started

1. Pick a heart with a little personality. Choose Quilt LOVE or Made With, then select a size that suits your project and embroidery field. Die-cut the matching cotton heart and prepare its permanent backing following OESD's cotton-patch method. Test any layered material before cutting and follow your cutter's thickness limits.
2. Stitch the patch in its own hooping. Hoop two layers of Badgemaster, stitch the placement line and position the prepared heart. Secure it as directed, then follow your selected design's tackdown, detail and border sequence. Match the bobbin thread for the finishing border where the tutorial calls for it.
3. Give it a home. Remove excess film, rinse as directed and allow the patch to dry completely. Press face down on a press cloth. Sew the finished patch onto your project, or add Fuse and Seal to its back after stitching and follow the adhesive's directions on a heat-safe surface. Let it cool before removing the backing and pressing it onto the final item.

Keep the Happy Patches instructions and patterns handy, alongside OESD's cotton-patch tutorial. The booklet includes general applique examples; the separate tutorial explains how to create and finish a standalone patch. Its demonstration uses other designs, so follow your selected heart file's stitch sequence.

A quick size check: Both heart styles measure 2.18" × 2.15" in Small, 3.18" × 3.20" in Medium, and 4.16" × 4.14" in Large. Small and Medium fit within a 4" × 4" embroidery field; Large exceeds that field. Check your machine's usable stitching area before choosing a size.

You will need an embroidery-capable machine and the file format it supports. OESD includes ART, DST, EXP, HUS, JEF, PES and VP3 embroidery formats. Keep each file at its original size to match the die-cut heart. The die cuts the base fabric; the finished embroidered border makes the patch a little larger. These are decorative designs, not automatically personalized name-and-date labels. Embroidery files and supplies are sold separately.

Die Tips

• With some fabrics, a thread or two may remain where die blades meet after cutting. Snip these threads with scissors.
• Blades on some dies are positioned at an angle. Align fabric to the edge of the shape, not the edge of the die board.
• Use good quality fabric to reduce fabric stretch.
• It's always a good idea to test cut one shape before cutting many shapes to ensure fabric orientation is correct.
• Care & Maintenance: Use adhesive roller or die pick to clean lint and thread from dies. Die blades never need to be sharpened.
• For Studio or Studio 2 use, fit the GO! die in the appropriate GO! die adapter and compatible Studio tray, and use Studio cutting plastic instead of a GO! cutting mat.
• GO! Bolt material limits: up to 6 layers of cotton, batiks or silk; 2 layers of cotton with fusible web; or 1 layer of fleece, flannel, denim, leather, wool, batting or felt. Use no more than 4 layers when running two 5-inch-wide dies side by side. Start with fewer layers and follow the cutter and die instructions.
