Teresa Kogut has been an artist at heart since childhood, always dreaming of a life devoted to creativity. With the encouragement of her family and friends, she turned that dream into reality, becoming a full-time artist in 1992. Driven by the desire to work from home while raising a family, Teresa founded Primitive Folk, Inc. in 1994 with her husband, Kevin. They began by selling her framed watercolor prints to gift shops nationwide, which led to art licensing opportunities starting in 1997. Her creative journey took a new turn when she discovered punch needle embroidery at a quilt market years later. Captivated by the craft, she began designing and selling punch needle and cross stitch patterns to needlework shops in 2005—a focus that remains at the heart of her business today. Through her brand, Teresa Kogut’s Creative Whims, Inc., she also shares her techniques through online tutorials in both punch needle and painting. Teresa and Kevin were married in 1988 and have been partners in both life and business ever since. Now retired from the sheet metal trade, Kevin works alongside Teresa full time. Together, they’ve raised three children and are now proud grandparents to Ellery and Easton, who bring even more joy into their lives. Based in Michigan, Teresa finds daily inspiration in the peaceful surroundings of their home, where her studio overlooks a pond often visited by deer, wild turkeys, herons, and other wildlife. Teresa is deeply grateful for the ongoing support of her customers, licensees, and shop owners who have helped bring her artistic vision to life and make her lifelong dream a reality.
