COUNTER is a bold and evocative fabric collection by artist and designer e bond, created exclusively for FreeSpirit Fabrics. Inspired by the world of typography, the collection explores the concept of the "counter"—the space inside and around letterforms, whether open or closed, narrow or wide. These often-overlooked spaces, such as the central void in the letter "O" or the curve inside a lowercase "e," become central elements in a design narrative that sees these areas not as empty, but as full of potential. The idea for COUNTER originated during a 2024 residency at the renowned Hamilton Wood Type & Printing Museum—home to over 1.5 million pieces of wood type and the only museum in the world dedicated to the preservation, study, and use of wood type. During this time, e bond focused on printing with oversized, billboard-scale wooden letterforms—some over 3 feet tall—bringing new life and expression to these historic shapes. This collection continues in the tradition of e bond’s previous fabric lines—GLYPHS, ROOT, and RAVEL—each of which investigates the form, function, and feeling of written language. COUNTER is a visual celebration of typographic form, offering designs that are both artistic and deeply rooted in the history of print and type.
